Dethatching? Dethatching a lawn is where a big tool called a Power Rake goes over your lawn and uses a rake like blade to pull up all of the old thatch. What is Thatch? Dethatching allows for the removal of the layer of "thatch," simply known as dead grass. Why do we suggest Dethatching? If this layer was not removed, the "thatch" (dead grass) creates a layer under the turf that makes it very difficult for water, fertilizer, or beneficial microorganisms to get to the root systems of the grass. To penetrate this layer of thatch and restore health to your lawn, Lawns-R-Us suggests to either Aerate or Dethatch the lawn, in most situations to do both, so that your lawn has the optimal allowance for a healthy, green looking lawn! What is Core Aeration? Core Aeration is when we use a big rolling power tool to create small perforations, or holes, in the lawn. The cores, also known as plugs, are re-deposited onto the top of the lawn and work as a beneficial top dressing. Why do you Core Aerate? Even if your variety of grass isn't prone to thatch buildup, there is always a concern with compaction of the soil overtime. Turf becomes compacted after regular use. Compaction leads to denser soil, which makes it hard for nutrients and water to penetrate your lawn. When should you Core Aerate? Lawns-R-Us recommends aerating twice per year for optimal results. The best time to aerate lawns is in the spring time. It can be done in the summer, however the lawn must have ample irrigation in order to recover properly. Fall is the second best choice to aerate. What is the Cost of Core Aeration? By calling ahead of time and scheduling this service, we are able to complete all of our customers during the same day that we are in your area. This allows us to charge you less than if you were to call after we have already provided this service to others. This saves you money. If you schedule your aerating job when we are doing many houses at the same time we can aerate for a very affordable price - $65.00 for most homes. |
